Tiny Home Design Trends for 2023

Sometimes on this blog, we talk about practical matters like how to find tiny home financing or where to find legal tiny home parking. Today, however, we are going to leave logistics behind.

So grab a cozy cup of coffee and settle in because today we'll be chatting about our favorite subject: tiny home design.

If you want to buy a tiny home, chances are you're looking for more than just a roof. In fact, most of our clients want something much bigger: they want magic.

And to that, we say, lean in. Life, after all, is for living.

Here at Teacup, we set the stage for magic during the design process. And we do it by basing our designs on one simple premise:

Tiny home designs are most powerful when they foster connection.

You may want a stronger connection with your spouse or your children. Or maybe you'd like a stronger relationship with yourself. Whoever it's with, we want this upcoming year to be filled with rewarding relationships.

And with that, here are some tiny home design trends you can expect to see in Teacup's 2023 lineup!

Tiny home builders don't always share what's happening behind the scenes, but here at Teacup, we like to be transparent.

To that end, we wanted to give you a peek at our mood board. Here are some words we're relishing as we enter 2023!

  • Warmth
  • White oak
  • Sculpted
  • Dark green
  • Wood accents
  • White-on-white accents
  • Natural light

This year, we want to build the coziness of winter into your tiny home- while making your house light and bright enough to enjoy all year round! How will that manifest? We're glad you asked.

Let's talk tiny home texture.

In 2023, you're going to see more vertical wall paneling. We're leaning into that because it adds texture and interest while creating some serious luxury.

People tend to focus on a tiny home's square footage- so much so that they forget what makes a tiny home show-stopping: vaulted ceilings.

Nothing brings luxury and a feeling of limitlessness to a home like ceiling height, and this year, we'll be highlighting that height by using vertical wall paneling to draw your eyes upward.

Vertical wall paneling also serves to add texture. Because is it just us, or are you over the sterile hospital-like feel of uber-smooth and shiny spaces?

Are you ready for a coffee refill? Perfect timing. We were just about to move on to the kitchen to talk about 2023 tiny home color trends!

Let's talk tiny home color.

If you've been following us on Instagram, you might have noticed that we have a lot of green cabinets. Our clients can't stop requesting them!

This season, though, we're taking the tiny home palate one step further and going with darker shades of green. And if the thought of 'darker shades' in a small kitchen scares you, please don't let it.

While it's true that too much of a dark color can make a small space feel smaller, using it selectively can bring a tiny home to life. The secret here is contrast.

The tiny home kitchen cabinets might be darker this year, but to keep contrast high, we'll be keeping the floors and ceilings light-colored. Our wood of choice for this task? White oak.

OK, we've covered texture and color, but here's the big tiny home design trend that's coming your way in 2023; are you ready?

Let's talk tiny home room separation.

Yup! The rumors are true- we're creating more separation between living spaces.

Sorry, we didn't mean to make you spill your coffee!

We know that room separation is a big departure from the 'open concept' theme that has ruled the last decade, but this decision has been a long time coming, and we're making the transition on purpose.

Here's why it's important to separate rooms in a tiny home.

Open concept has its benefits- mostly when it comes to light. But while we love lighting with every fiber of our being, there are other ways to achieve it than by building one big room. When you buy a Teacup, we want you to feel like you're truly getting a whole house, not living in a box!

The other reason we're adding more room separation is to give family members their own spaces to decompress.

This might seem counterintuitive to our goal of fostering connection, but after almost twenty years of designing luxury living spaces, we've learned that in order for people to connect, they first need to recharge. Connecting with others is hard when you aren't connected to yourself, so we want to give you the space to do that.

Now that you know why room separation serves you in a tiny home, let us be clear that we're not talking about full-wall separation- that would make a tiny home feel cramped!

Rather, our 2023 Teacup tiny homes could come equipped with pony walls, built-in furniture pieces, steps, and other features designed to create room definition.

And do you know the best part about the room definition? It's going to give you even more tiny home storage!

Let's talk tiny home storage.

Tiny home storage is always at the forefront of any would-be tiny houser's mind. And that's why we're doubling down to give you more of it than ever!

Remember the pony walls, built-in furniture, and steps we mentioned earlier? Well, all of those things are going to provide storage.

Pony walls could have shelving on the back, and downstairs bedrooms could come with built-in bedside tables for your stack of books. Closets by the front door can give you and your guests a place for shoes and coats, and steps may either have lifting lids or cubby compartments as design permits.

Tiny home principles dictate that design choices should serve more than one purpose, and in 2023 we're excited to build a tiny home that gives you more luxury, functionality, and options than ever before.

What do you think of these tiny home design trends? Are you ready to build your tiny house?

Our team at Teacup knows that it's a big decision to buy a tiny house, and so let us just end this post by saying that if you experience hesitations along your journey, we understand.

And we also want to tell you this: there is no rush

In fact, if there's any trend we could get on board with for 2023, it would be people living on their own timelines.

So take all the time you need.

And when you are ready to say yes to adventure, coziness, peace, autonomy, simplicity, financial stability, sustainability, and, of course, magic, we'll be waiting to help you bring your next chapter to life.

Until then,

-Jen
